Alyosha, who shares a name with the author’s young son who died during the writing the novel, is the spiritual side of Dostoevsky, one who is. between faith and the examined life, and the problem of freedom. There has been a tendency in recent articles to depreciate Bakhtin’s contribution to Dostoevsky studies, expressed particularly strongly by Elena Dryzhakov in her article ‘Segmentatsiya vremeni v romane Prestupleniye i nakazaniye’, Dostoevsky Studies6, p.
