I had recently asked a friend what he thought the book was really about. It’s listed as a novel but it feels more like a collection of short stories, but even that doesn’t describe it properly.
Steps by Jerzy Kosinski
In this haunting novel, distinctions are eroded between oppressor and oppressed, perpetrator and victim, narcissism and anonymity. Have had this sincea crusty old paperback taken for free or not much more from a neighbor’s yard sale. We are not sure. He never rises that high ever again, not in the scope of the book at least. There is no message here; sex and violence are solely for shock value or maybe because of the author’s mental health issues. One key feature of this book is that it jezy chronology.
It’s kind of a fuck you to both literature and to the US Bourgeoisie. It’s like a Madonna video or bad, juvenile punk rock: But it’s not hard to see where this is going: Steps is like something a younger, hornier Haruki Murakami might write.

The book has been interpreted as being about “a Polish man’s difficulties under the harsh Soviet regime at home played against his experiences as a new immigrant to the United States and kosinxki bizarre codes of capitalism.
The writing was phenomenal, and I was deeply moved by the book on any number of occasions.

Wat een koud en grimmig boek is dit, en daarom ook fascinerend. It is a dirty little secret which malingers in one’s imagination. The action is almost universally perverse with kinky sex and violence that happens without clear relation, except in its bizarre repetition. To be moved, to have our patterns disrupted—fried even?
